He studied graphic arts at the London College of Printing.

He covered the conflicts in Northern Ireland, Central America and the Middle East for the London Sunday Times Magazine, before settling in Paris and then New York.

Derek Hudson has since worked as a freelance photographer for Time, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Stern, Paris Match, Vogue, The Observer and Sunday Times in the UK.

During the 1990s, back in England, he worked under contract for Life until 2000. From that date, he collaborated with French publications such as Le Monde 2, Géo and Télérama. 

From 1997 to 2000, he also covered the Cannes Film Festival, for the newspaper Le Monde.

From 2000 to 2010, he worked more particularly with Géo Magazine on the portrait of Mediterranean cities, but also continued to photograph for Le Monde 2, Le Monde, The Financial Times magazine, Time and Newsweek.

Today he devotes himself to personal projects.

He has received the World Press Award several times, but also the American Art Directors Association Award for excellence in his work. He recently received the 2010 Montblanc / Insensé Prize.
