Sebastião Salgado

born in 1944 in Aimorés (Bresil)

From 1977 to 1984, after many years of photographic journeys in Europe and Africa, Sebastião Salgado made many trips to Latin America, going to sweltering regions and those that were low and on the coast. He journeyed from the northwest of Brazil through to the mountains of Chile, to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. He experienced indescribable mysticism in the Sertão of Brazil, amongst men in leather with fierce struggles, surviving in places so barren, so poor, yet maintaining morale in the entire country.Read more

He crossed the misty Sierra Madre mountains, with its hallucinogenic mushrooms and magic peyote, hearing tales of the dead that were at once so alive in the storyteller's imaginations. There, it was incredibly difficult to know just how integral we are to this world, because death is the inseparable sister of everyday life.

This work will last seven years, seven centuries perhaps. The unraveling of time moves at a speed which is both slow and dense, marking the passage of all of the eras of this region of the world who come from a flow of cultures at once so different and similar in their beliefs, through strokes of fate and suffering.
