In his practice, Toshio Shibata refuses to limit himself to the mere description of these landscapes. Using a large-format camera to manipulate the scale of the scenery, he systematically removes the sky and the horizon from his frames, creating images that are unique and unconstrained. Even if the titles of the photographs provide a setting, the images bear no topographic information. Shibata's photographs are not a study of the metamorphosis of landscapes.
