"I spent the first weeks of quarantine organizing my print archive with the help of my French intern Pierre Sérot (who has since found a flight back to France).
When we opened the box where we found these two photographs, I remembered them distinctly. They were both taken during the San Gennaro festival in New York City and I always thought they were good and even better than a lot of the photographs in my first book Facing New York. The reason I had decided not to show them is because I'm a perfectionist: the negative was overexposed and when I first saw the prints I realized that the flash was a little too harsh on the skin. I was disappointed and I'm so critical that I just put them aside during all these years."
