Jürgen SCHADEBERG
Le "photographe de l'histoire de l'Afrique du Sud" prend son premier cliché à Berlin dans un abri anti-aérien, à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Jürgen Schadeberg a alors 12 ans. Décidé à quitter son pays qu'il a appris "à détester", le jeune Allemand, équipé d'un appareil photo, embarque en 1950 sur un bateau à vapeur, direction Le Cap. Déception: il retrouve en Afrique du Sud le même racisme, le même mépris. Ce n'est pas la politique mais sa passion pour le jazz qui le place en pleine action, au côté des hommes qui allaient déterminer le destin de leur pays tels que Nelson Mandela. Directeur artistique du magazine "Drum", il fait travailler la première génération de photographes noirs comme Alf Kumalo. Son travail lui vaut injures et arrestations. Entre 1964 et 1985, il enseigne en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, collabore à de nombreux magazines, réalise, avec sa femme Claudia, des films et des documentaires. Il retourne en Afrique du Sud en 1985. Aujourd'hui, il vit dans un petit village du Perche sur lequel il prépare un beau livre surprenant.
