André S. Solidor was born in 1962 in the city of Grand Citron, in the Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni borough of French Guiana. His mother was a native and his father a French aristocrat that disappeared soon after his birth. He began demonstrating his strong observational skills and talents for drawing at a very young age. 

At 14, André was sent to Haïti to work on a manioc plantation. This is where he discovered photography thanks to a meeting with a LIFE photographer who was on assignment for a story on poverty. André realized that photography was his way out of misery and entered the fantastic world of art. Read more
