It was at the age of 40 that she discovered photography. Her father gave her an old Nikon camera to “take pictures of his grandchildren”. “I became hooked after using my first roll of film”, says Peggy Levison Nolan today. In front of her attentive lens, brimming with love, is her entire family, in particular her seven children (four boys and three girls, born between 1967 and 1982).
The tribe lives in Miami, Florida, in a working-class neighborhood where other large families live. Peggy Levison Nolan sets up a makeshift darkroom in her laundry room and, late at night, shoots her photos, rinsing them in a garbage can.
In 1986, she enrolled in the photography department at Florida International University, Miami, and began working part-time. She graduated in 1990, finishing with an MFA in 2001. Peggy Levison Nolan still lives in Hollywood in the suburbs of Miami.
