Born in Issy-les-Moulineaux in 1959, Philippe Chancel has toured the world several times for his projects - at the crossroads of art, documentary and photojournalism. After studying economics, he began his career as a reporter in Eastern Bloc countries (Poland, Romania, USSR) and in France. In 2005, he managed to enter North Korea. It was the start of a new adventure. He visited the country several times - seven times in total - to capture what turns out to be an “allegory of happiness” in a totalitarian regime. This work was presented at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2006.
For almost fifteen years, the photographer then worked on “Datazone”, a project on the world's disasters (political, ecological, natural, human), from the United Arab Emirates to the glaciers of Antarctica, from the Niger Delta to Japan.
