Many images from his first trips, in 1957 and 1965, have become icons: meals at the steel plant’s cafeteria, three little girls walking down a Beijing street in winter, an engineer in front of his phones, the window of an antique shop in Liu Li Chang street that is no longer. All these images are now are memories of a forgotten society.
