Matt’s latest personal project plays with the traditional crime genre of American fiction. Set in the late-1960s and shot over four weeks in the state of Louisiana, the series features a full cast of actors, with wardrobe, makeup and hair, lighting, and location services sourced from the New Orleans film and television industry.Read more

Thematically the series continues Matt’s interest in American small town life and the power of storytelling in shaping communities. “Ideology underpins every kind of story,” says Matt,“ and at the root of all ideology is a viewpoint about mankind; brutal and selfish or forgiving and kind. Less constrained by the pressures of city life, the small town has always acted for me as the perfect stage to play out the stories we tell ourselves about what it really means to be human.” Matt has long championed the ambiguity afforded by working in still images as set against more nuanced mediums such as film and literature. “Free from the need for denouement, coherence and resolution,” Matt claims, “I am able to tell the story that I want to tell. That perhaps the crime drama should have no answer. It’s a cliché to say that all of us are in part responsible for the fate of others by the stories that we tell, and by the things that we do or don’t do, but never is this truer in the small town. I think this is the reason that it continues to fascinate in so many genres of fiction.”
