Rather than engaging politically, large numbers of America’s youth sought refuge in music, meditation, drugs, mysticism, or Eastern religion, in the belief that inner change might alter the collective external experience. The Trip re-imagines the potential of this person-based philosophy as two Southern conservative couples embark on an unexpected psychedelic trip. The denouement offers the sort of victory for hearts and minds that the counterculture coveted for the nation. Marking Henry’s first shoot on American soil, this project returns the artist to the theme of community and its relation to the political whole.
